چکیده

Juvenile English sole (Parophrys vetulus) utilize Yaquina Bay, Oregon as a nursery during at least a portion of their first year of life, but the possibility of the existence of additional nursery grounds offshore has not previously been examined. During 1971, young-of-the-year first appeared in Yaquina Bay in February, were abundant from April to September, and most emigrated to offshore areas in October. Examination of English sole, collected both in the estuary and offshore, revealed certain parasites that appeared to be acquired by the fish only while in the estuary. The acamhocephalan Echinorhynchus lageniformis proved useful in determining the extent of estuarine utilization. The incidence of infection in bay fish before emigration (29.9%) was similar to the incidence in 0-group English sole collected offshore after emigration (28.5%). This result suggests that there was little or no influx of young from other than estuarine nursery grounds to the offshore study area and that on the Oregon coast, estuaries are very likely the exclusive nursery grounds for this species. Other parasites were not useful in determining the extent of estuarine utilization, but two, the nematode Philometra americana and a microsporidan Glugea sp., were considered to be indicators of residence in the upper estuary. The trematode Zoogonus dextrocirrus and metacercaria of the trematode Otodistomum veliporum were found almost exclusively in fish collected offshore, indicating little or no back-and-forth movement between estuary and open

Climate mediates hypoxic stress on fish diversity and nursery function at the land-sea interface.

Coastal ecosystems provide numerous important ecological services, including maintenance of biodiversity and nursery grounds for many fish species of ecological and economic importance. However, human population growth has led to increased pollution, ocean warming, hypoxia, and habitat alteration that threaten ecosystem services. In this study, we used long-term datasets of fish abundance, wate...

Relationships between hepatic neoplasms and related lesions and exposure to toxic chemicals in marine fish from the U.S. West Coast.

English sole (Parophrys vetulus) inhabiting polluted waterways and embayments of Puget Sound, Washington, are affected with a variety of multiple, co-occurring idiopathic hepatic lesions, including unique degenerative conditions, putatively preneoplastic foci of cellular alteration, and neoplasms. Results of a statistical analysis of the patterns of co-occurrence of these lesions in wild Englis...

Consistent associations between hepatic lesions in English sole (Parophrys vetulus) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in bottom sediment.

A consistent and statistically significant association between prevalence of hepatic neoplasms in free-living sole (Parophrys vetulus) and levels of anthropogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in bottom sediment from sites of fish capture was documented in a series of studies conducted over a period of 7 years in Puget Sound, Washington. This result strengthens the evidence supporting a caus...

Field and laboratory studies of the etiology of liver neoplasms in marine fish from Puget Sound.

A series of field studies was conducted between 1979 and 1985 in Puget Sound, Washington State, to investigate etiological relationships between prevalences of hepatic neoplasms in bottom-dwelling marine fish species, with emphasis on English sole (Parophrys vetulus), and concentrations of toxic chemicals in sediments and affected fish. Statistically significant (p less than or equal to 0.05) c...

Biomarkers Signal Contaminant Effects on the Organs of English Sole (Parophrys vetulus) from Puget Sound

Fish living in contaminated environments accumulate toxic chemicals in their tissues. Biomarkers are needed to identify the resulting health effects, particularly focusing on early changes at a subcellular level. We used a suite of complementary biomarkers to signal contaminant-induced changes in the DNA structure and cellular physiology of the livers and gills of English sole (Parophrys vetulu...
